This has been a hot summer, so … up into the Sangre de Cristo and cooler temperatures.
The Drive In
The drive to the trailhead: from downtown Santa Fe, head out on Hyde Park Road (NM 475), 9 miles from the Santa Fe Plaza (by way of Washington Ave/Bishops Lodge Road, right/east on Artist Road, then continue onto Hyde Park Road). The trailhead will be on the left just beyond Hyde National State Park.
The Hike

We have hiked this trail often, sometimes just an out-and-back hike (6/30/2025) or as part of a loop with adjoining trails (such as Borrego-Winsor-Bear Wallow – /29/2018). This day:
The trail begins in an open meadow, then forested areas for the remainder of the hike. ’tis an easy slope; most of the trail is smooth dirt (‘tho at one point we had to get down a vertical 4 foot rock, and climb up it on the return). At the far end of Borrega we crossed the bridge over the Tesuque Creek to the intersection with the Winser Trail. Then we continued up the Winser Trail for 3/4 of a mile along the creek – more distance and elevation gain.
